I still have the Gaga Fever!!!

Both me and Carman have not been able to stop listening to Lady Gaga's albums since her concert. The more we listen to her songs, the more we appreciate her talents. She's freakig brilliant. It's not hard to recognize her love and devotion for the music. She's pure ART! Her profile on her official website gives a good background on who Lady Gaga is.

When Lady Gaga was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The precocious child would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as a baton. And, she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit.

It’s no wonder that little girl from a good Italian New York family, turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady Gaga.

“I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady Gaga, 22, who made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances where Gaga – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits — would strip down to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange.

“I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says Gaga, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy, and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”

That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: Gaga is the girl who at age 4 learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls, and has been asked to write for a series of Interscope artists) before her debut album was even released, Lady GaGa has earned the right to reach for the sky.

“My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says Gaga, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/Interscope/KonLive). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.”

On The Fame, it’s as if Gaga took two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock with a splash of disco and burlesque and generously poured it into the figurative martini glasses of the world in an effort to get everyone drunk with her Fame. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.”

The CD’s opener and first single, “Just Dance,” gets the dance floor rocking with it’s “fun, L.A., celebratory vibe.” As for the equally catchy, “Boys Boys Boys,” Gaga doesn’t mind wearing her influences on her sleeve. “I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls,’ but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like.”

“Beautiful Dirty Rich” sums up her time of self-discovery, living in the Lower East Side and dabbling in drugs and the party scene. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says Gaga. “Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.” On first listen, “Paparazzi” might come off as a love song to cameras, and in all honestly, Gaga jokes “on one level it IS about wooing the paparazzi and wanting fame. But, it’s not to be taken completely seriously. It’s about everyone’s obsession with that idea. But, it’s also about wanting a guy to love you and the struggle of whether you can have success or love or both.”

Gaga shows her passion for love songs on such softer tracks as the Queen-influenced “Brown Eyes” and the sweet kiss-off break-up song “Nothing I can Say (eh eh).” “‘Brown Eyes’ is the most vulnerable song on the album,” she explains. “‘Eh Eh’ is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.”

For the new tour for this album, fans will be treated to a more polished version of what they saw (and loved) at her critically acclaimed Lollapalooza show in August 2007 and Winter Music Conference performance in March 2008. “This new show is the couture version of my handmade downtown performance of the past few years. It’s more fine-tuned, but some of my favorite elements to my past shows – the disco balls, hot pants, sequin, and stilettos – will still be there. Just more fierce and more of a conceptual show with a vision for pop performance art.”

It’s been a while since a new pop artist has made her way in the music industry the old-fashioned/grass roots way by paying her dues with seedy club gigs and self-promotion. This is one rising pop star who hasn’t been plucked from a model casting call, born into a famous family, won a reality TV singing contest, or emerged from a teen cable TV sitcom. “I did this the way you are supposed to. I played every club in New York City and I bombed in every club and then killed it in every club and I found myself as an artist. I learned how to survive as an artist, get real, and how to fail and then figure out who I was as singer and performer. And, I worked hard.”

Gaga adds with a wink in her eye, “And, now, I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time.”

I love the fact that she's involved in every aspects of her music. It makes her music and performance more personal and multi-layered. I can't say enough about it. Both me and Carman listen to a very wide range of music, but for us to be this engrossed about an artist (the only other is Yoshiki of X-Japan), it takes a lot to impress us. Lady Gaga has completely won us over.

Lady Gaga - Monster Ball

OMG! Lady Gaga does not disappoint again! We went to her SOLD OUT Monster Ball concert Wednesday night~ It was so freakin awesome! This time's concert is definitely more glamorous than the one earlier this year in March at the Commodore. She even mentioned that it was only a year ago this time, she was in Vancouver touring with the New Kids on the Block. I find it very impressive that she got to where she is now in only a year~ And if anyone took the time to just read about a bit of her history, you'd find that she's no ordinary pop star. She is incredibly talented. I feel honored to be able to witness her talents live. Anyway... I'm still gushing about being only 20 feet from her! Hahaha~

Lady Gaga gave a non-stop performance for 2 hours straight. No breaks~ And no lip sync! Haha! If I remember right... she sang all but one song (Telephone) from her new album, then she also sang the older ones, Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi, Eh Eh, The Fame, Money Honey, Boys Boys Boys, and Paper Gangsta. It was so fucking fantastical!!! I love that awkward sexiness that only she can pull off.

Start of the concert... count down...

BTW... you noticed what she was wearing during that last set? Isn't strange to see Gaga in PANTS??? *snickers*

Oh, and her performing guests this time are Semi Precious Weapons. They performed with Lady Gaga back in 2007, before she became a mega star. Carman got up close and personal with the lead singer. Hehe!

They are still talking to me....

Not to worry. I'm not schizophrenic.

The "they" I'm talking about are the characters that have forced themselves into my life during NanoWrimo. This year's NanoWrimo have been done and over with a week ago. And they're all still making a racket in my head, making me continue to add to my word count! >_<

Speaking of word count, I'm pretty happy to say that I broke my own record from last year. I still didn't win the challenge... someday... someday I will. Haha!

Anyway, as long as the characters are still talking to me, I mind as well not fight it and put as much down on paper (or on screen?) before they leave me. Without a deadline, I'm happy to just put down a couple hundred words a day. Maybe the impossible would happen! I could actually finish writing a novel!... nah...

While on the topic of novels... I have been spoiled by Xena fanfics that I can only read lesbian novels. There are so many excellent published novels that started off on the web as Xena fanfics. But my BIGGEST pet peeve about these books are... WHY DO LESBIAN NOVELS HAVE TO HAVE SUCH HORRIBLE COVERS???? C'mon... just go to Bella Books (a prominent lesbian publish house) as an example... just take a look at those covers??? Would you be caught dead holding one of these books in public? If I ever get published (yes, I know... wishful thinking), I would want a hole to crawl into if my book cover is this ugly!

Just a rant... thanks for reading. Haha!

6 rows away from Lady Gaga!

So I heard on the radio yesterday that more tickets to the Lady Gaga concert will be available today at 10am. I've already got tickets to her show on 11th, sitting in Row 20. It's not too bad, actually, given Queen Elizabeth Theatre is a small venue. The 11th wasn't the date we wanted... but it was all I could get at the time.

I figure I'll try my luck today and see if I can score some more tickets with better seats. At 10am sharp, I clicked search for 2 tickets for the show on the 9th (this is the original date we wanted to go to), and lo and behold! I got seats in ROW 6!!!! Whahahaha!!! These are totally WAAAAY better seats!

And I was subconsciously stress about our original seats, having a dream about being at the concert last night, trying to figure out my dilemma of sitting so far back from the stage... and trying to take photos of her with my "non-professional" camera~ Hahaha!

Update Dec 5: I sold my tickets for the night of the 11th. For $340! Whahaha! We're going to her concert for FREE!!!

Double Booo-yah!

Beyonce and Lady Gaga are two of my FAVORITE artists. I'm so stoked that they're collaborating together! This is Beyonce's Video Phone video, featuring Lady Gaga. Ooooooh~ Sorry to Gaga... but this is B's vid, she owned it! Gaga seemed out of her element, while Beyonce just sizzled! I'd be very interested to see the Telephone video to see if Gaga can best Beyonce on her own turf.

Why do we have these people in our parliament...???

This Monday, the long awaited vaccine for the H1N1 flu finally was approved and given to the public. With increasing more reports of death resulted from the virus, of course everyone wants the vaccine. Unfortunately the current supply is not able to keep up with the demand.

I think it's totally reasonable and undoubtedly logical to give the vaccine to priority groups. That includes pregnant women past their 20th week, adults under 65 with pre-existing medical conditions, aboriginal people living in remote and isolated reserves. Next week they will include children from six months to less than five years of age, health-care workers, household contacts and care providers of infants less than six months of age and people who are immunocompromised. This all make perfect sense, don't you think?

Then I see Hedy Fry on the news yesterday voicing her opinion on this.

While every other commoners in the country have to wait to get their vaccine, Fry argues for the need to set up a "special clinic" on parliament hill to give H1N1 to parliamentarians because they're a high risk group... because they have to "shake hands" with god knows how many times a day with people!!! And it pisses me off the way she says it too. It's like.. "Duh~~~ of course we need it more cause we're above everyone else."

Hey, Hedy, here's a few suggestions for ya... don't shakes hands! And if you do, don't lick your fingers afterwards! And even little kids would know this... WASH YOUR HANDS! Geez! It's really this simple to not catch the damn virus!

Fingers Crossed!

Well, after running my crapped out drives through the manufacturer's diagnostic test showed they seemed to have developed a slew of bad sectors. There were so many that they just fail to start up properly as RAID-1 array. So I took the drives out of the enclosure and hook each one to my mobo directly. Thank god my BIOS recognize them and I can see the data on them!

I thought I was saved! Funny thing was... after I hooked up the drive and restarted the computer... somehow this caused Windows to lose/delete all of its font files! So when Windows restarted... all the text in the start menu, folder/file names, etc are all in weird illegible symbols! How am I suppose to navigate through this gibberish to back up my files!? >_<

After much research online, I found the solution to simply copy the font files I have from Carman's laptop (running XP) to my Windows 7 folder. The source from where I found this solution did not guarantee this as permanent solution... but I gotta try something! Fortunately, it worked for me, and so far even after rebooting, the texts are still displaying properly.

During my research, I also found that I stupidly thought RAID 1 would protect me from the headache I'm going through now. Last year, my previous harddrive died because of physical hardware failure. That drop from the top of my pc tower onto the floor must've eff-ed up the read/write head. Anyway, in that situation, a RAID-1 might have saved my data... but maybe not also cause both drives would've been dropped at the same time. But IF only one of the drive sustained damage, and the other didn't, I could've rebuild the array with the good disc and have all my data restore just like that~ Anyway, after loosing a harddrive I thought I set up a RAID-1 array to better protect myself... little did I know that RAID-1 doesn't protect against user errors, software malfunctions, virus destruction, etc. If any of these happens to one drive... it will be mirrored onto the second drive. I'm pretty sure that's what happened to my array. I had to force a shut down of CS4 a while ago, and since then, I've had problems with the drive. Whatever file CS4 was working on at the time must've gotten corrupted during the shut down. This, I assume, is the root of my problems. And since both drives then are corrupted identically... I'm hooped~ RAID-1 did nothing for me.

For now, I'm concentrating on backing up whatever data I'm able to savage from the damaged drives. My photos seems to be safe for now. I've bought a year's subscription at Mozy.com, a remote backup service. I'm currently trying to back up 282GB worth of data. On the Mozy website, it says the average rate of backup is 5GB per day... ahahahah! So... I guess I may finish my backup in... oh, about 2 months!

What the freak...!!! Again???

Damn it to hell! My external hard-drive has crapped out today! I've had the same thing happened to me last year~ my old hard-drive got busted when Kahlua pull it off my PC tower and smashed onto the floor. So when I bought the next new drive, I made it into a RAID 1 array. And it stopped working today!!! FUCK! I got both HDD1 and HDD2 error lights lit. Still waiting anxiously to hear back from the manufacturer of the enclosure to see if my data can be saved. ARGH!!!! I hope I don't lose all my photos again!!! >_<

First Day Of School

Yesterday I took my Bebe to SFU for her first day of school. Knowing how unproficient she is with a map and has a horrible sense of direction, I'm quite worried she will get lost in the big campus. SFU is not considered very big... but it's quite a bit bigger than Douglas College. Anyway, so I decided I will take her up a day before her classes officially start so I can make sure she knows how to get to them without getting lost on campus.

I gotta say though... while I'm pretty good with maps and directions, there were a couple of times I got confused with which way to go. What SFU should provide to all new students are campus GPS's that can be downloaded onto an iPhone or Blackberry, etc!!! Cause the maps aren't very useful themselves, you can't really tell how to get out of one building to go to the next one. Cause the linking walkways could be on different floors, or proper doors aren't shown on the maps. They don't make it easy for new students to find their way around.

So at the end, we managed to find all of Carman's classrooms. And she knows where to get off and on the bus. We also go her library card and U-Pass all set up too. SFU's student cards are ugly... IMHO. Good thing Carman's photo turned out great to redeem the ugliness of rest of the card. Hahahaha!
